PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Research and Outreach

Research interests in the areas of agricultural marketing and price analysis, agricultural risk management, market efficiency, forecast evaluation, and futures market speculation.

Co-director of the AgMAS project ( http://www.farmdoc.uiuc.edu/agmas) at the University of Illinois since its inception in 1994. This long-term research project provides unbiased and rigorous performance evaluations of agricultural market advisory services. The research results have been widely-used by US farmers when selecting advisory services and have also provided the foundation for a new generation of grain market ‘averaging' contracts.

Team leader of the farmdoc project ( http://www.farmdoc.uiuc.edu/) at the University of Illinois since its inception in 1999. This innovative outreach project provides comprehensive economic information and analysis for farmers and agribusinesses in the U.S. Cornbelt. The project has garnered national, state, and campus awards for excellence. The farmdoc website has received over 18 million page requests to date.

Co-developer of the farm gate ( http://www.farmgate.uiuc.edu/), the first public-sector blog for farmers and agribusinesses in the U.S. Cornbelt. Introduced in December 2005, this pioneering site at the University of Illinois provides integrated information across agricultural subject-matter disciplines and receives over 10,000 unique visitors monthly.

Co-developer of Agritrends, a quarterly television program produced at The Ohio State University. The 30-minute program updated the agricultural commodity situation and presented important agricultural policy issues in a ‘talk-show' format. Over 20 public television stations throughout the US regularly aired the program between 1987 and 1993.

$4.4 million in grants awarded to support research and outreach program ($3.3 million in competitive extramural grants; $1.1 million in intramural grants and private gifts).

Co-developer of numerous online and spreadsheet decision-tools for agricultural decision-makers, ( http://www.farmdoc.uiuc.edu/cropins).

Served as academic and research advisor to 11 Ph.D. and 19 M.S. graduate students.

Over 200 outreach presentations on a variety of topics, including agricultural marketing, market advisory service performance, crop insurance, grain and livestock market outlook, and managed futures investment.
