Recent
farm income variability, the implementation of a new Farm Bill,
an uncertain economic outlook, and continued competition in
the world market provide significant challenges for farm and
farm-related business managers. The University of Illinois Extension
and the Department of
Agricultural and Consumer Economics will be conducting the
third annual Farm Income workshops in December 2002 to address
some of these challenges for the year ahead.
The workshops
will include three general sessions – “Illinois Farm Income Situation,
“Outlook for Commodity Prices”, and “Which America Will Produce
Soybeans?” and four breakout sessions:
- “ Making
Sense of Farm Land Lease Options” will provide an overview of
trends in farmland leases, issues associated with alternative
leases, and an evaluation of lease alternatives.
- Agricultural
Policy and Law: New Developments/Pressing Issues” will explore
such issues as how to protect farmers from elevator failure; is
there liability in growing genetically engineered crops, including
root worm resistant corn; and how the Farm Bill impacts
Illinois agriculture.
- Making
Sound Crop Insurance Decisions With a New Farm Bill” will present
the concepts, tools, and guidelines necessary for making an informed
decision on crop insurance.
- “Keys to
Developing Successful Grain Marketing Programs” will address issues
of assessing producer marketing performance and development of
successful approaches to marketing grain.
